The High School Survey of Student Engagement is recruiting schools to take
part in its first national administration in 2004. HSSSE builds on the success
of the National Survey of Student Engagement that has been administered
to more than 425,000 college students over four years and applauded for
the useful data it has provided institutions of higher education. HSSSE
similarly will provide information on school characteristics that shape
student engagement and can be used to stimulate discussions on and influence
school improvement. HSSSE was pilot tested in Glenbard (Illinois) High School
District in 2003 with 7,200 students.
HSSSE will be administered to more than 100 high schools in spring 2004.
Participating schools receive customized reports that provide mean comparisons
of student responses against national norms by class/grade, instructional
track, race, and gender. Schools also receive a CD of their own data that
can be used for further analyses if desired. While schools may use and distribute
their own data as they wish, HSSSE will only use data in the aggregate for
various reports and will never rank, compare, or identify schools in any
way.
